This work reflects on sustainability in Africa, with a focus on Nigeria. Created with layered mixed media, it combines charcoal, colored pencils, acrylic paint, and marker pens to symbolize both fragility and resilience. Lumina draws its name from light—representing the shift from obscurity to awareness. Areas once left in the dark are illuminated by knowledge and sustainable practices that respond to climate change. The composition emphasizes the importance of awareness, adaptation, and collective responsibility in shaping a brighter, more sustainable future.
Lumina was inspired by the urgent need for sustainable practices to address climate change, particularly within the African context. Observing the challenges and opportunities in Nigeria, I wanted to create a work that highlights how awareness can transform communities. The use of mixed media—charcoal, colored pencils, acrylic paint, and marker pens—allowed me to experiment with contrasts between shadow and brightness, symbolizing the transition from neglect to responsibility. The title, Lumina, represents light as a metaphor for knowledge, innovation, and the possibility of a sustainable future.
