"Behind the Mask" honors the resilience of women as guardians of cultural memory and tradition. Inspired by themes in 'Things Fall Apart,' I depict a woman in symbolic attire, embodying authority, spirituality, and connection to the divine. The mask-like features and elaborate headdress reflect the complex roles women hold in Igbo culture, from ancestral reverence to governance. This artwork invites viewers to acknowledge the often-overlooked contributions of women in shaping cultural identity and societal values.
My work draws inspiration from the resilience of women portrayed in Chinua Achebe's novel "Things Fall Apart," specifically figures such as Ekwuife, Ezinma, and Chielo. I explore the themes of festivals, rituals, and oral traditions, highlighting the role of women as unsung cultural custodians. My art reflects the strength and endurance of these women and their vital contributions to community survival in times of collapse. Through my practice, I aim to honor their legacy and shed light on the often-overlooked narratives within the cultural fabric of society.
