Harrison Idahosa · Maiduguri, Borno State · Nigeria
This painting features a motif linked to the Kanuri, Fulani, Hausa, and other peoples of northern Nigeria, where horsemen, often referred to as “Yan Daba,” symbolize prestige and leadership. I employed spontaneous, impasto brushwork, layering reds, ochres, and blues to blur the lines between figure and environment, capturing movement and memory. The composition focuses on the horse and rider, highlighting verticality and stature. The palette merges warm earth tones with cooler shades, celebrating the richness of culture.
Motivation
My artistic practice focuses on capturing the elegance, prestige, and vibrant colors associated with the traditional horsemen of Northern Nigeria. Through gestural and spontaneous strokes, I aim to convey the richness of this culture rather than the intricate details of the figures or subjects. My work seeks to evoke the spirit and vitality of the horsemen, reflecting their significance within their community. By emphasizing movement and emotion, I invite viewers to engage with the cultural heritage that inspires my art.
