About the Artist
Full name: Lawal, Rasheedat Ajoke
My name is Lawal Rasheedat Ajoke, a visual artist from Abeokuta, Ogun State, currently based in Ilorin, Kwara State. I began my creative journey during the global lockdown in 2020, a time that gave me the chance to slow down and discover new ways of expressing myself. What started with painting on tote bags gradually grew into a deep passion for abstract art on canvas.
I am fascinated by abstraction because it does not require a direct meaning. A painting can appear uncertain at first, but once interpreted, it unfolds into clarity. This freedom allows me to create art that speaks differently to each viewer, turning every piece into a unique dialogue between my canvas and those who experience it.
I work primarily with acrylic and textured paint, exploring depth, layers, and movement in ways that mirror both the unpredictability of life and the serenity I find in it. Over time, I have completed a number of commissioned works on a small scale, and I continue to refine my artistic voice. Through my paintings, I hope to invite people to pause, reflect, and experience calmness beyond the surface.
Artist statement: My abstract paintings are inspired by the calmness of nature. Using acrylic and textured paint, I explore depth and form to create spaces of reflection, inviting viewers to slow down, feel peace, and find clarity in stillness.
